When you hear the statement just three words you likely think about "I love you". I have come to realize that there are 3 words not to far off from that phrase that can have a bigger impact. It comes with a longing, like love, and can be gifted from a stranger.
I SEE YOU!
In a world where all we think we need is love to feel validated, I think being seen and heard can have a much larger impact. This idea was born from a conversation between two people in a movie, which moved them in the direction of no longer being strangers. This one phrase had a huge impact in the scene and on me. As we drift through life bumping into others like bubbles in sudsy sink, remember... you never know someone's full story, and likely they do not know yours.
Be kind, have patience, and when you can... pause, and let people know you see them. It is very easy to treat people like transactions that come and go. Changing this habit can be as simple as saying thank you and meaning it to a cashier, telling a stranger on the street how much you love their hair, or telling someone you love their shoes. Acknowledging those around you, their efforts, and the little things in their day can make someone feel seen.
I know I can certainly be better at this. I will continue to have patience, show I care, and continue to let fellow humans know they are important and they are seen.
Movie in reference... I highly recommend giving it a watch: Clara 2018 ‧ Sci-fi/Romance ‧ 1h 46m
